HOPE (Helping Other People Everywhere) Toronto Inc. is a volunteer driven registered charity operating in the City of Toronto with a mission to raise funds and awareness for local charities. HOPE also strives to get people more engaged in helping others and accomplishes its mission by organizing fun, active, and social events, all in support of organizations who are already working hard at Helping Other People Everywhere in our community.

HOPE supports charities who are striving to break the cycle of poverty and/or relieve human suffering. HOPE supports charities working in the areas of:

  • Poverty and Homelessness (e.g. shelters, food & clothing banks)
  • Crisis Intervention (e.g. abuse, depression/suicide)
  • Affliction Management (e.g. support programs for people affected by illnesses or disabilities)
  • Mentoring (e.g. programs working to refocus peoples' lives in positive ways)

HOPE Toronto generally seeks to support small "grass roots" charities where its funds will have a noticeable impact. It's a fact in just about every charitable organization that some portion of the charity's resources must be allocated to fundraising. For smaller charities, those who provide essential services are often also called upon to fundraise. HOPE views its support as a means of permitting a charity to allocate more of its resources to helping people, which is what they are meant to do. Therefore charities that do not have large portions of their annual funding secured on an ongoing basis are good HOPE candidates.

HOPE provides funding on an annual basis. Charities seeking repeat funding must reapply annually. HOPE selects charities from the pool of applications received in the current year of funding, with no preferences given to charities previously supported. To achieve the goal of noticeable impact and to provide adequate exposure to charitable causes, HOPE selects a small number of charities to receive the benefits associated with its events.

HOPE will not fund deficits nor support work in areas of research, advocacy/lobbying, public awareness campaigns, environment, animal welfare, or fundraising. HOPE does not solicit any applications.

To qualify for HOPE funding a charity must also meet the following criteria:

  • The majority of people served by the charity must reside within the broader Greater Toronto Area (a.k.a Golden Horseshoe), roughly bounded by Cobourg to the east, Barrie to the north, Kitchener to west, and St. Catharine's to the south/west.
  • The services provided by the charity must not discriminate on the basis of nationality, race, or religion. This does not preclude the charity from being sponsored by a particular national, racial, or religious group so long as such sponsorship is not viewed as a restriction to its services.
  • Must be a Registered Charity with Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (formerly Revenue Canada) with clear and active status.
  • Must have at least one year of an operating track record providing its services.
  • Must not be receiving a significant portion of its annual funding from governments or other agencies.
  • Charities that are able to secure one corporate sponsor to support HOPE may be given first priority.
  • Charities must provide volunteers for set up the day prior to the tournament and take down the day of the tournament.

HOPE will support local programs of larger charities if the program meets the above criteria and HOPE's donation can be restricted to the local program. To ensure full involvement from selected charities, HOPE has proposed a sponsorship requirement for the 2008 charity selection process. In an attempt to build relationships within the Greater Toronto Area, charity recipients may include in their application efforts that they would make to recruit a minimum of one new sponsor.

All proceeds from HOPE events are donated to the charities selected for each event. The charities selected will be required to provide assistance to the event in a manner to be determined. As one of HOPE's stated goals is Awareness, the selected charities will also be required to staff a booth at the fundraising event with information about the charity for the event participants and spectators.

HOPE's primary fundraising event is the HOPE Volleyball Tournament, which takes place annually in June. Charity Selection for HOPE takes place in the fall for the following event cycle. The application deadline  for the 2009 cycle is Friday August 15 , 2008.  In order to have the most up-to-date information available, applications should not be submitted prior to July 1st.  For 2007 Hope Selected two(2)  charity recipients with net proceeds distributed evenly.
